Remember, you can have a say in the outcome of the pregnancy. Most women truly want the input of their baby’s father when facing this type of situation. Your support means a lot to her right now, so here’s a few things to keep in mind:
Do listen and support. She needs your support now more than ever. She may be carrying the baby, but you are both the parents. No matter what happens with your relationship in the future, you will always be the father of this baby.
Do talk about it—not only with each other, but prepare to talk with parents and others close to the situation. Hiding the news from people who can genuinely help you only increases the stress.
Do get the facts. Seek out all the information and good advice you can get so you can make the best possible decision. Read more about your options here.
Don’t bail. You can try to run from this, but it’s not going away. Here’s your chance to step up, take responsibility and grow personally through a tough experience.
Don’t pressure her. Be honest and make your opinions known, but don’t push her to do something she doesn’t want to do or make a decision too quickly.
Don’t leave it all up to her. This is your child as much as it is hers, and you need to work together toward the best outcome for all three of you.
